The Proper Canine uses operant and behavioral training to achieve optimal results for you and your pet. We base our training style on positive reinforcement of desired behaviors, using a basic action-reward system.
If your dog does something you want it to, like sitting quietly, we reward that. The reward might be a treat, but it doesn’t have to be food to be effective. For example, some pets love a certain toy, so playing with that toy can be just as rewarding as a snack for them. In some cases, the most effective reward might change over time. We use whatever tools work best for your dog at the moment.
It is also important to take the comfort level of your dog into consideration. A dog that is anxious or distracted won’t get good results from any kind of training. Moving as fast or as slow as your dog needs is the best strategy. If baby steps are needed, baby steps will be taken.
Consistency is also key. Owners and pet care givers need to follow-through and keep consistent with the positive reinforcement of good behavior. If you stay consistent, you will get good, lasting results from your pet much faster. This is an important tenant of behavioral training.
